Focus Issue

Erosion of Local Authority for Counties and Cities in NC

Speakers

Sig Hutchinson -Wake County Commission Chairman (Confirmed)

Jennifer Robinson – Cary Town Council (invited)

The topic discussed at this meeting will be the erosion of the authority of our counties and cities by the State Legislature. Some background for this issue:

With the passage of HB2, the State Legislature has demonstrated a persistent lack of regard for the impact of state policy on local concerns, both economic and social. They have further subverted their own claim to smaller government by pursuing centralized control over issues that should be the bailiwick of cities and counties.

Case in point: A bill has been introduced that would strip Cary, Raleigh, Holly Springs, and other cities of their right to charge impact fees for new development. This will shift costs from developers and builders to property owners, raising their property taxes while increasing the profits of builders and developers. We have invited Cary Town Council member Jennifer Robinson to our meeting on May 1st to speak on this issue.

The North Carolina State Legislature is attempting to gerrymander the County Commissioner seats in Greensboro and Wake County. Commission Chairman Sig Hutchinson will be on hand to speak about this issue.

At the conclusion of this meeting we will be asking for volunteers to work on the issues committees. Volunteers will work in a team to post two or three articles per week related to one of our issues.
